History
In 1998 the Council of Europe and the University of Klagenfurt agreed on the establishment
of a unit for intercultural studies hosted by the university and integrated into its institutional
structure. The Confidence-building Measures programme within the Council of Europe figured as the main
partner of the Centre for Intercultural Studies (cis). The creation of the Centre was the result of a decade
of close cooperation between different departments at the Council of Europe and members of the staff of Klagenfurt
University in the field of intercultural communication and education, human rights, minority rights and multilingual
matters. In the framework of this cooperation six international workshops and conferences on these topics took
place between 1989 and 1999 at Klagenfurt University. During this period the "Klagenfurt Network" developed.
Today the network comprises about 200 experts and project managers of intercultural
projects in fields such as education, media, social welfare, cross border cooperation.
In 1999 the Centre for Intercultural Studies (cis)
started its work at the University of Klagenfurt.
In the beginning the Centre's activities concentrated on projects in South-Eastern Europe.
